St. Cloud State scores a perfect 4-0 record at Newberry Duals

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (5-0 overall, 1-0 NSIC) charted a perfect 4-0 record at the Newberry Duals on Sunday, Dec. 3. The tournament was hosted by Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. The day included SCSU victories over UNC-Pembroke, Coker, Newberry, and Limestone.

SCSU opened the day with a 44-3 triumph over UNC-Pembroke. The match included five pins for the Huskies along with a pair of major decisions that helped SCSU cruise to the win.

In match two, SCSU continued its success with a big 48-6 win over Coker College. The Huskies posted six pins in the match along with a tech fall and a major decision victory to ice the win.

In the third match of the day, the Huskies were strongly tested by host Newberry. The dual started with a pair of wins for Newberry at 125 and 133 before Jarred Oftedahl gained a 5-0 win at 141. SCSU gained control of the match with four unanswered wins at 149, 157 165 and 174 before Newberry gained another win at 181. To complete the match SCSU’s Vince Dietz gained key points with a fall at 1:59 against Nick Weldon of Newberry.

The Huskies rounded out the day with another lopsided victory. This time, SCSU scored a 40-4 win over Limestone to end the trip with a perfect 4-0 record and also gained the Newberry Duals title. SCSU scored four falls in the match along with a major decision to wrap up the decision.

The Huskies will now host the annual Holiday Inn/Huskies Open, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9 in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse. This open style event attracts many of the region’s top collegiate wrestlers and the action begins at 9:00 a.m. The day has also been designated as Military Appreciation Day along with SCSU Wrestling Parents Day.
