Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from South Africa was crowned the Miss Universe 2017, this morning. People cheered for her as she enjoyed her moment of glory with the prettiest of crowns resting on her head. But there’s more to this wonderful woman than meets the eye.
Beauty pageants are often perceived to be all about swim-suits, evening gowns and flawless makeup; and anyone who participates in these events is often assumed to be a touch-me-not, delicate darling. We couldn’t be more wrong. Crown or no crown, all of these young women are more than just pretty faces. For instance, we all know Nel-Peters for the title she has won but what we don’t know about her is that she is a business management graduate from North-West University.
Our Miss Universe 2017 does much more than just win coveted pageants. She ‘s a woman of substance who helps train other women in self-defence. Earlier in 2017, Nel-Peters survived a car-hijack by punching her attacker right in the face. That’s when she decided to launch the ‘Unbreakable’ campaign.
“It was an awful experience but I knew how to handle the situation in the best possible way because I had done WIP and MasterDrive workshops for women that focused on everything from hijacking and robberies and how to handle these situations, to how to get out of toxic and abusive relationships. I am a firm believer that knowledge is power and the information I learnt on these courses certainly helped me. So now together we will set up similar workshops,” she told Wheels24.
That just reaffirms the fact that she indeed, deserves the title she has been awarded. We are so proud of you, Nel-Peters. You’ve set an example for women all around the world and the phrase “beauty with brains” is perfectly suited for you.
