Men, their rights and nothing more;
Women, their rights and nothing less.
– Susan B. Anthony
What does it take to be a woman?
It takes bones, blood, flesh and veins to be a woman, same as you. Like you, she is biologically your reproductive counterpart.
She breathes in the same air as you and consumes the same water. Fire burns her alike and earth is as much her home as it is yours. However, what really is different about her is her capacity to dwell within her womb the same 5 elements you are made of. She is power immaterial, that you are born from.
It’s not easy to trace back how, when and who was responsible for ‘genderising’ the human race, but sure they had all doom and hell planned, and how! Aren’t we all responsible, though? Women are still treated as second sex and transgender are the invisible lot in this so called evolved society.
The everlasting problem with our society is they can’t come to terms with the fact that a woman is self-sufficient – the state of masochism is so deeply rooted in our system, it is very hard to break the walls we have created around us. Society deeply fears a woman who shows even the slightest sign of an ‘erupting volcano’ she is within.
You fear her independence, you fear her thinking pattern, you fear her free spirit, you fear her power, and you fear her, in her own entirety. You fear the powerful compassion she can weave the world with. It’s hard for you to accept that she holds within her the magic to create and demolish her own creation. You fear her balance, the stability to hold together everything, you fear her supernova instincts.
When society creates barriers for women, it represents its own mental state – a state of deep instability and insecurity to call spade a spade. Devising gender role wasn’t meant to overpower, to burden one gender with all and let the other walk free. The eternal right to freedom is what we inherit as humans. It’s a simple fact and not a cacophony of word. A woman cannot be branded as a domestic help available at your whims and fancies.
When you tag somebody a ‘feminist’ akin name calling, you kill a woman within because feminism is not an adjective, feminism is not a cluster of women becoming a suicide squad, feminism is not pulling a man down – Feminism is exactly what ‘shakti’ is in her own wake.
A woman is not a next door wh*re, available at your beck and call. She is not a mother, a friend, a sister, a wife, and a daughter – it’s high time we realise she is an individual first. She has an identity of her own and she does not need your approval for it.
When society sets defined gender roles, it also gives one ‘so called’ gender a greater role of authority over the other – there, then exists a power to exercise control, a power to ‘allow’ and ‘not allow’ certain aspects to the other ‘so called’ gender.
If this piece hurts your Ego, if this makes you angry – I will congratulate myself because I have put my point across quite well.
Society overstate gender roles, I break FREE of the clutches – Radhika
