Is Work-Life Balance Just Another Urban ‘Myth’?

There might be days when your work consumes you. So much so, that your inbox is flooded with unread emails, there is an untouched pile of files on your desk, and of course, a never-ending to-do list eyes you from a corner. Well, you are not alone, we’ve all been there.

The idea was to work for a living, but it seems that the tables have turned and now, we live to work. We work in the office, we work from home, we work from our phones, and we work while we are travelling. We are working pretty much all day, every day. And somehow, when we a take a minute to realize what’s happening to us, we question – can we ever achieve work-life balance?

What Exactly Is Work-Life Balance?

Work-life balance is when you don’t eat your lunch at your desk. It is when you go out on a Friday night without having to check emails on your phone. It is when you don’t take your work home. In simple words, it is a situation where you balance your professional and personal life equally. Honestly, in a world where everyone is aspiring to do more in less time, people have stopped caring about work-life balance. No one has the time, you see?

Don’t Miss
  • Is Work-Life Balance A Myth?

If you work five or six days a week, you might wonder how exactly are you supposed to achieve any kind of balance? While that is a valid concern, it is important to understand that work-life balance is a broad concept, which goes beyond the number of days you’re working in a week. Work-life balance is NOT a myth; all you need to do is to find the right fit for yourself. If you are at a job which doesn’t make you happy, of course, you’ll never attain work-life balance. If you are at a job where you’re on-call 24 X 7, of course, you won’t have work-life balance. But if you are at a job where you dedicate a fixed number of hours to your work, without ignoring your personal life, you will realize it’s actually not that hard to strike a balance.

    Why Is Work-Life Balance Important?

According to Forbes, experts have concluded that the compounding stress from a never-ending workday is damaging. It can hurt your relationships – within your work organization and even with your family. You might not notice it right away, but being overworked takes a toll on your health – both mental and physical. Having work-life balance will keep you sane, happy and motivated.

Here’s How You Can Attain It

One of the ways to attain work-life balance is to disconnect yourself. The moment you unplug yourself from official work, you cease to be constantly on your toes and this helps you relax. Another thing you can try is meditation. Now, a lot of you might feel like it’s transcendental crap, but believe us, it genuinely helps you calm down. You can also attain work-life balance by starting small and building up from there – try to read that book before going to bed, take up that hobby you gave up because you were too busy, spend more time with your family, go for a long-drive, leave from office a little early and watch a movie. Find little way-outs and go big from there.

If A Big Career Change Is What It Takes, Do It

While some of you might achieve work-life balance in your given jobs, there are a lot of people who aren’t happy with the work they are doing and want to make that big career change. Vera Wang was a figure skater and journalist before entering the fashion industry at the age of 40. When she switched careers, she became one of the world’s premier women’s designers. Martha Stewart, after facing a stint as a stockbroker, pursued her love for gourmet cooking and creative presentation into what is now Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia; it is currently valued at more than $400 million. If you feel that getting a better, more satisfying job is all that is standing between you and a balanced life, don’t let the fear of failure hold you back.

All it takes is a little effort to bring about change in your life. Believe in yourself, make time for yourself and find the balance before it’s too late.
