In a world where the crime rate is skyrocketing, there’s still some hope left, thanks to people like Martin Willis who go out of their way to save someone’s life. Willis is a UK Police officer and his heroic effort to save the life of a lorry driver is what makes this story worth telling.
On Friday when Willis was on duty, he received a call about a road crash on the A1 highway in West Yorkshire. He was the first one to report at the site of the accident. The van had overturned as a result of the crash and was hanging off the bridge. The driver was inside the van and half of the lorry was swinging in the air, off the bridge.
“I walked on the hard shoulder to the incident and I as I did so a lorry driver, who was not involved in the incident, shouted across to say there was a chap upside down in the van,” he said.
The highway was blocked and Willis constantly reassured the driver that it will all be okay.
“I told the victim not to panic and said ‘we’re going to get you out of there, whatever you do, don’t move.’ I then grabbed hold of the rear wheel and pulled inwards which helped to keep the van balanced. I was there for a good 15 minutes I think,” the officer admitted.
The driver was rescued after pulling the van to safety. It took about two hours for the whole operation to be executed and the driver suffered leg injuries in the crash.
Twitter had the sweetest reaction and here are a few tweets:
Willis’s spontaneity helped save the day and we can’t thank him enough for proving that humanity still exists.
