Young Cobbers Help Concordia-Moorhead Remain Unbeaten In Dual Meets
JAMESTOWN, N.D. — No.6-ranked Concordia showcased its future in posting a pair of dual-meet wins at Jamestown. The Cobbers used a total of seven freshman wrestlers to beat Jamestown 40-3 and the University of Mary 39-12 in the triangular hosted by the Jimmies.
Concordia won 16 of the 20 individual bouts on the night as they remained unbeaten in dual meets this season. The Cobbers are now 3-0 in duals on the year.
Jakob Stageberg led the young Cobbers in the dual-meet wins. Stageberg won both his matches at 125 on the night. He scored a major decision over Stuart Brandt of Jamestown and then earned a forfeit win against the University of Mary. Stageberg is now 14-5 on the season and one of three CC athletes to own a double-digit win total.
Stageberg was also one of three CC athletes to record two victories at the triangular. Junior Zach Barber was 2-0 at 165. He came away with a pin against Jamestown at 165 and then won by forfeit vs. the University of Mary at 174. Barber is now 8-6 on the year and has three wins by pin fall.
Sophomore Justice Davis claimed a pair of wins at 285. Davis recorded his team-leading fourth pin fall against Antonio Lopez of Jamestown in the opener and then battled to a 4-3 decision against Travis Smith of Mary in the nightcap. Davis’ decisions highlight how far he has come since last season. Last year Davis was only able to beat Lopez 3-2 and had a total of 11 victories the entire season. Davis is now 12-4 this year and has won five of his last six matches.
Freshmen Jacob Johnson, Adam Presler, Dane Ringquist, Kody Van Den Eykel all posted single wins on the night. Johnson won his only bout of the night at 174. He scored a 1-0 decision in his match against Ryan DeSpain of Jamestown. He is now 4-5 on the year.
Presler earned just his second win of the season by collecting an overtime decision at 141 against Jamestown. Presler won 4-2 in the first sudden victory period against Anthony Kiefer.
Ringquist was 1-1 on the night and improves to 4-1 on the year after joining the team late in the fall because of his duties with the Cobber football team. Ringquist recorded a 4-1 decision over Jonathon Gonzalez of Jamestown at 141. He then lost 3-1 to John DeVito of Mary.
Van Den Eykel had the shortest time on the mat of any CC athlete. He wrestled for only 54-seconds as he pinned Wyatt Smith of Mary at 197 in his only match of the triangular. The pin fall was van Den Eykel’s fourth of the season. He has five total wins in his first collegiate season and four have been by pins. He is tied for the team lead in that category with Davis.
Concordia won nine of the 10 individual matches against the Jimmies. Gabe Foltz, Yonas Gebreab and Ben Cousins earned the other wins in the first match. The Cobbers then won seven bouts vs. the Marauders. Will McCarthy, Jake Kostik and No.3-ranked Jake Krogstad all recorded victories. The two Jakes won their matches by pin falls.
Concordia will head back to multi-team invitational mode when they compete in the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open on Sunday, Dec. 7 beginning at 9 a.m.
