The heart of a 21-year-old Surat woman was flown to the city on Tuesday to give a lease of life to a 26-year-old man who was surviving with the help of a mechanical pump implanted into his chest for the past 35 days. The organ was transported from a Surat medical facility to Mulund’s Fortis Hospital, a distance of 282 kms, in 1 hours and 47 minutes.
For the donor, Jhanvi Patel, a joyful Saturday evening proved fatal as she allegedly slipped and fell off a car’s boot, where she was sitting along with a friend. Patel, who had recently completed a course in fashion designing, sustained multiple fractures and a head injury. Her friend, who was sitting next to her, is believed to have suffered fractures. Patel was rushed to the INS Hospital in Surat, where doctors on Monday informed her family that her condition had shown no improvement.
