Living in a world that’s so cruel, barbaric and hostile, we often question our ethics and the culture we live in. Quite nonchalantly, we take the liberty of blaming the system, deeming that’s where the problem is and often forgetting that we too are a part of it.
In our society, where there is no place for utopian altruism, we must realise how far a simple act of kindness can go. How, not only can it rescue someone in the given moment, but save them from adverse eventualities, maybe forever.
All of us have seen someone crying in a public space, someone quivering over a thought, shouting on a call, someone who fell down, someone who was injured, and someone who could not speak about their suffering – but have we ever done anything to ease their pain?
A bunch of kind hearts around the world, whom we know as strangers on the street, have gone out and beyond their way to help people. Their simple acts of compassion and generosity ended up giving life lessons to millions.
These strangers are people on the subway who offer you seat, in washroom who offer a tissue when you’re crying, the man who stopped by to help you change a punctured tyre, the woman who bought you food, the uncle you offered a free ride, the old lady who gave you good advice – they are everywhere.
Because it is only when those who are suffering don’t have any refuge, they seek comfort by making themselves vulnerable in public spaces, and these people are literally godsend in such situations.
In such a case, a smile, a hug, a note saying that ‘It’s okay, you’ll be fine’ or ‘This too shall pass’, can go a long way.
Most help doesn’t involve money
A lot of times the help doesn’t take a penny and that’s the brilliance of this deed. Even if it does, in most cases, it finds a way to come back to you.
Recently, there was a story about an auto-wala who helped a girl who ran out of money and how Muslims in London offered free rides, food and stay to complete strangers – the world can always use some kindness.
You Might Just Save Someone’s Life
One of the kindest things you can do for a stranger is helping without expecting anything in return. For people in crisis, anything from a company to isolation works. You just need to be willing to help.
Such help is a testament and a token reminder that someone’s thinking of you and wants you to feel loved – that there is hope beyond the hardship of simply getting by.
Your help will find a way to come back to you
Help too, just like happiness and sadness is contagious. When you help someone for the first time, you start a long chain of people who will begin to help. And then, your help finds a way to come back to you.
So, if you’re helping, you’re making a difference and we sincerely thank you!
Last year in October, a study revealed that India ranked on top when it comes to helping strangers. The report concentrated on various forms of giving and India secured the topmost position in flying colours.
